Since January 1, 2023, federally regulated motor carriers in Canada must use a third-party certified ELD that meets the Canadian ELD Technical Standard. K3 is not on that certified-device list.
| Certified ELD vendor | K3 on Wialon | |
|---|---|---|
| Federal HOS duty-status logs | Required — certified device + driver app for log transfer | Not provided — customer keeps their ELD vendor |
| GPS location & trip history | Usually included on power units | Platform + OBD or ValenTrack on Wialon — same-day deploy |
| Harsh events / behaviour | Varies by ELD vendor | OBD harsh brake, idle, mileage — insurer and coaching exports |
| Trailer / drop-and-hook visibility | Tractor-only — trailer identity lost at hook | ValenSolar — independent trailer GPS and geofences |
| Video evidence | Some vendors bundle dashcam | Dashcam Plus 2.0 — outward-only, GPS-synced clips |
| Sales motion | Incumbent ELD relationship is sticky — do not rip and replace | Complement ELD — lead with asset gap or safety/UBI data |
| Vendor | Segment | ELD / compliance note | K3 win when they are incumbent |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISAAC Instruments | Quebec in-cab ELD & fleet platform | Purpose-built rugged tablet — drivers prefer vs BYOD smartphone ELD | Asset and trailer-first — complement or displace cab-only spend |
| TrackSmart | Canadian all-in-one fleet & asset platform | Broad SKU list on one brand — ELD, video, solar, magnet, trailer, reefer, PODS | Start with highest-loss assets — trailers, reefers, containers — not full catalog |
| Geotab | Enterprise fleet telematics | Strong ELD and driver-behavior story for regulated carriers | Trailer & asset-first, not tractor-only GPS |
| Motive | ELD + fleet safety | Strong ELD and FMCSA-adjacent credibility | Beyond ELD — asset theft, custody, and recovery playbook |
| Powerfleet (Fleet Complete) | Canadian-born fleet & asset platform | Broad checklist: GPS, ELD, asset tracking, AI dashcam (FC Vision) | Start with highest-loss assets — trailers, reefers, containers |
| Trimble Transportation | Enterprise TMS + telematics suite | Enterprise TMS + telematics consolidation story | Deploy visibility on highest-loss assets first |
“Can K3 be our ELD?”
→ No — federal HOS requires a Transport Canada–certified ELD from vendors like ISAAC, TrackSmart, Geotab, Motive, or Powerfleet. K3 adds trailer visibility, optional OBD safety data, and video on Wialon alongside your ELD.
“We already run Geotab / Motive / ISAAC for ELD.”
→ Keep it — those platforms own duty-status. K3 closes the trailer and asset gap ValenSolar handles in ~25 minutes, plus optional outward dashcam or insurer exports.
“OBD plug-and-play is enough for compliance, right?”
→ OBD on Wialon gives GPS and behaviour — not certified HOS logs. If they operate under federal HOS, they still need a certified ELD; position K3 as complement, not substitute.
“Why add K3 if tractors are already on ELD?”
→ ELD sees the powered unit only. Drop-and-hook, port dwell, trailer theft, and reefer integrity need asset-side GPS — that is the K3 story.
