Three things owners care about

Does this rule apply to my trucks?
Three quick checks. No form. Then pick a next step.
1. Do you run any heavy highway trucks — over 11,793 kg (about 26,000 lb), including trucks you lease?
Smaller trucks are often outside the rule. Still check the weight on each one. Many fleets want video for insurance either way.
2. Do those trucks drive in British Columbia — the port, Vancouver area, Highway 1, Highway 5, or the Interior?
If the trucks never enter B.C., this rule may not apply. Video can still help with insurance and cross-border runs.
3. Do those trucks already have a road-facing camera that saves the location on each video?
A camera from a store usually is not enough. Start with the one-time camera or the $29 monthly plan.
Some of your trucks may be outside this rule. Still check the weight on every truck. Video often helps with insurance even when the rule does not apply.
Connected Protection is CA$29 per truck a month. You get the road camera, live location, and a way to pull video after an incident.

Prices are in Canadian dollars, per truck. Installation and shipping are extra. The green card is where most fleets start.

Valentir programs are built around outward-only recording, retention, and audit-ready clips for B.C. fleets.
| Requirement | Bill M-217 | Valentir program |
|---|---|---|
| Camera orientation | Outward-facing (road only) | Road-facing mount; no in-cab lens |
| Resolution | 1080p minimum | 1080p outward stream (verify firmware) |
| Night vision | Required | Low-light / IR-capable sensor (spec sheet) |
| Retention | 72+ hours stored | Cloud + local buffer per platform policy |
| Recording | Continuous while operating | Ignition/operating-state linked recording |
| Audit trail | Evidence for investigations | GPS + timestamp on every clip in ValenInsights |
Compliance that helps with insurance
Outward video protects professional drivers when passenger vehicles cause the crash — and gives brokers the evidence telematics programs expect.
GPS + timestamp on every clip for faster claims and less downtime
Insurer-ready incident packs — agree export format with your broker before the deadline
Path to usage-based / safety-score programs (harsh events, mileage, video) when you move to connected tiers
Outward-only install — no cabin camera required by Bill M-217
Ce dont vous avez besoin pour M-217
Four plain steps. Your shop can handle the fine print later.
Why a consumer dashcam usually fails B.C. compliance
Retail units rarely meet the full program checklist insurers and auditors expect.
| Capability | Consumer | Big enterprise | Valentir |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPS + timestamp on clip | Rarely | Often separate system | Built in — one incident packet |
| Retention / night / 1080p | Inconsistent | Yes, high cost | Programmed for B.C. checklist |
| Driver messaging | English manual only | Corporate portal | EN + 中文 + Punjabi yard materials |
| Fleet scale path | No telematics path | Multi-year integration | OBD → hardwired → dashcam on one platform |
Driver buy-in — English, 中文, Punjabi
Rollouts stall at the yard gate without clear messaging. Lead with privacy and exoneration, not surveillance.
Meet B.C.'s outward-facing truck camera rule on one platform — compliance for the fleet, fair evidence for drivers.
This camera faces the road only — not you in the cab. Your privacy stays protected.
If another driver causes the crash, the video helps prove what really happened.
Same K3 app your dispatcher uses — you are not being singled out.
Common driver objections
Driver privacy policySuggested phased rollout
Port and highway corridors first — Lower Mainland, Hwy 1, Hwy 5 — then remaining heavy units.
Highway trucks first
Phase 1: Highway tractors over 11,793 kg GVW (port / Hwy 1 / Hwy 5 lanes first).
The rest of the heavy trucks
Phase 2: Remaining heavy units before effective date.
Then insurance and coaching
Phase 3: Insurer export + driver coaching once clips are trusted.
Industry data: commercial drivers are often not at fault in crashes with passenger vehicles — outward video protects professional drivers.
FAQ dashcam C.-B.
